Ms. Rita Day

What’s special about April 9, 2017? Oh, right — it was Palm Sunday. It was the beginning of the holiest week in the church year. It was (this day in history) but was there anything, anything else important about that day?

Of course.  It was the 152nd anniversary of Lee’s surrender in the Civil War. It’s the 136th anniversary of Billy the Kid being convicted of murder. It’s the eighth commemoration of Honda winning the Green Car Award in 2009. Could there possibly be another special occasion on that day, though?

You bet.

April 9, 2017, was the day on which thirteen people in Okolona, Ky, commemorated Ms. Rita Appreciation Day for the first time ever.

Ms. Rita Bernauer is the sacristan at St. Rita’s where we have youth Mass. It was Ms. Rita who taught Michael Schultz how to play organ. It was Ms. Rita who took over piano and organ when he left for seminary. And it’s Ms. Rita who comes hours early every Sunday in order to prepare the altar for Mass, turn on the lights and sound, say a Rosary, and be there to welcome us all when we come. She’s there no matter what. Are John and Michael in Poland? Is the entire choir gone on a pilgrimage? Did her cousin just pass away? — She’s still there.  And in addition to all that (as if it wasn’t enough already) she’s always got a smile on her face. She might be stressed about finding us palms to have blessed, she might be in grief, or any other number of things, but she always wants to be there and talk to you.  In the words of several choir members, “she’s the glue that holds us all together.”

Ms. Rita Day was Holly Ray’s idea. One Sunday, she said, “we all need to show Ms. Rita how much we love her.” And this was the idea borne.

They were small gifts – a box with jewelry, chocolates, a Rosary holder, and an icon of St. Rita, a card, and a little planter of spring flowers. We hid them on the steps to the choir loft.

After Mass, most of the choir took Ms. Rita back to pray in the sacristy – something the choir’s been doing for a while now. John and I ran back to the choir loft and got intercepted by Mary P’Oryem, who needed her daily hug. She got conscripted into carrying the flowers. All our rushing attracted Olivia Ulrch and Matthew Flaherty, who followed us into the Adoration chapel.

“What’s with all the rush?”

“Shhhhh! It’s Ms. Rita Day!”

“Why are they praying for so long?”

“Go go go go go!!!!”

“Actually, Ms. Rita, Zoe and John left to get something. I don’t think you know, but today is Ms. Rita Appreciation Day, and we just wanted to give you a little something to show you how much we love you.”

“What did I do?”

This one reply, repeated at least three times, sums it up best: “what didn’t you do?”

When is Life Worth It? (A Meditation)

If you’re laughing,

If you’re smiling,

If it seems the sun shines just for you. . .

Then your life’s worth living.

If you’re with close friends

Sharing their pain,

Holding their hurts,

Living through their darkest night until the sunrise comes. . .

Then your life’s worth living.

If you’re working hard, and  at the end of the day

You see it all pay off when one little thing is better than before. . .

Then your life’s worth living.

If you have joy. . .

Accomplishments. . .

A purpose. . .

If there seems to be even a tiny bit going for you. . .

Or if you’re alone. . .

Afraid. . .

Impatient. . .

Stagnant. . .

Waiting for an answer that refuses and refuses to come —

If you feel you’ve fallen through the cracks and life has passed you by,

Is your life worth living?

Yes.

Because it’s not what you do.

It’s not what happens or what you feel should happen;

It’s not what others see or what anyone would ever measure by;

No, the quality of life is so much deeper than we’d have it be.

It comes from somewhere we can never fathom — where even our hearts can never reach.

Never doubt your calling.

Never doubt yourself.

Never doubt that all things are planned.

So if you’re waiting, watching the world go by —

Helpless. . .

Hopeless. . .

And realize, maybe just for a begrudging instant that waiting, too, is a vocation,

Then, above all other times. . .

Your life’s worth living.

Smile Through Your Tears (A Meditation)

When things are hard;
When things go wrong;
When you can’t do anything about what’s going on —
Smile.

When it’s terrible;
When you’re trapped in pain;
When the world is falling apart in front of your eyes —
Smile.

When you’re weak;
When you’re crying;
When all you want to do is run away from life —
Smile.

Smile when it hurts.
Smile when it’s tough.

Smile when there’s nothing good to look forward to.
Smile when there’s nothing hopeful in your world.

Because someone might notice you.
Someone might see your tearstained eyes —
And your smile.

He might look at himself:
She might say to herself:
“What am I doing?”
“What’s wrong with me?
How can you smile through your tears
When my life is fine, and I still can’t?”

When there are people around;
When it’s hardest to;
When there’s no reason in your mind —
Smile.

And when you’re walking back;
When you’re by yourself;
When you’re just a few feet from where you can’t call home;
Smile.

Then when you get home;
When the door is closed;
When the lights are out and only God sees you —
Smile.

Because he might look at you.
He might turn down his omnipotent smile on you.
And he would see it reflected in you.
And he would say to himself:
“Look at what I created.
Look at this mirror of myself.
Look how hard it is, how hard the work is.
Look at how little you feel.
Yet look at how you smile.
Bless you.”

And those words from God rest on your heart and soul forever —
All because of your smile.

WaterStep Launches!

This officially starts our “I Thirst” Initiative from Feb 5-Mar 31! Bring in your new or gently used shoes to donate to WaterStep so they can send the shoes to those in need and use the money to build wells and other water filtering methods in poverty-stricken countries! Also, bring in BABY shoes for the Little Way Pregnancy Resource Center to serve the local community in need as well and build the bridge between body and soul.

LIFE WEEK at the Big Four Walking Bridge will be our opportunity to engage with the local community about the ongoing need to quench the thirst of all those in spiritual and physical desperation! We are doing this to strengthen our support for our local pregnancy centers while raising awareness about the global crises afflicting all of our marginalized brothers and sisters.
